The Waiau River - Te Waiau Toa's Bigger Sister
While the Clarence River (Waiau Toa) is our signature half-day rafting destination, the Waiau River offers a different adventure altogether. This larger, more powerful river system provides multi-day wilderness expeditions through even more remote and spectacular country.
The Waiau River is bigger, longer, and offers more sustained whitewater than the Clarence. It's the perfect next step for those who've rafted the Clarence and want more, or for experienced outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true wilderness experience.
🏞️ A True Wilderness Journey
The Waiau River flows through some of New Zealand's most remote and untouched landscapes. Multi-day trips on the Waiau offer complete immersion in the backcountry - no roads, no people, no cell phone coverage. Just you, your group, the guides, and the wild river.
Camp on pristine gravel beaches under star-filled skies, wake to the sound of native birds, and experience New Zealand as it was before European settlement. This is expedition-style rafting at its finest.
River Character
Bigger & More Powerful
The Waiau River differs from the Clarence in several key ways:
- Volume: Significantly higher water volume - more powerful, more sustained rapids
- Gradient: Steeper sections create more continuous whitewater
- Length: Longer rafting sections possible - 50-80km+ trips
- Remoteness: Even more isolated than the Clarence valley
- Wilderness: Truly remote camping locations
- Rapids: More Grade II-III rapids, some approaching Grade IV at higher flows
The Rapids
Waiau rapids are longer and more sustained than the Clarence:
- Grade II-III: Most rapids, offering good whitewater action
- Longer Duration: Rapids that last minutes rather than seconds
- Wave Trains: Beautiful standing wave sequences
- Technical Sections: Require route reading and maneuvering
- Pool-Drop: Exciting rapids followed by calm pools for recovery

Important Information
⚠️ Experience & Fitness Level
Waiau River trips are more demanding than our Clarence half-day trips:
- Minimum age 14 years (16+ for extended trips)
- Good general fitness required
- Comfortable with multi-day camping
- Able to paddle for several hours per day
- Confident swimmers essential
- Previous rafting experience helpful but not required
🏊 Swimming Ability Required
All participants MUST be confident, strong swimmers. Remote location means self-rescue ability is important. Life jackets worn at all times on the water.
📅 Booking Timeline
Book at least 4-6 weeks in advance. Peak season (Dec-Jan) books out early. We need time to organize logistics, food, equipment, and check river conditions.
🌦️ Weather & River Dependent
Multi-day trips are very weather and river-level dependent. If conditions become unsafe, we may need to modify or postpone. We stay in close contact as departure approaches. Flexibility with dates is helpful.
📱 No Communication
No cell phone coverage once on the river. Guides carry satellite communication for emergencies only. This is a true digital detox!
