Experience the Clarence River
Our half-day rafting adventure is the perfect introduction to the stunning Clarence River (Waiau Toa). This family-friendly experience takes you through gentle Grade II rapids, offering excitement without overwhelming first-timers or younger rafters.
What makes this trip truly special is the opportunity to raft alongside some of New Zealand's newest geological features. The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake dramatically reshaped this landscape, creating fault lines, uplifted river terraces, and geological features that our expert guides will help you understand and appreciate.
What to Expect
The Journey
Your adventure begins at our riverside base where you'll meet your guides and receive all necessary safety equipment and instruction. After a comprehensive safety briefing, we'll head to the river for approximately 2 hours of rafting through scenic gorges and gentle rapids.
The Rapids
Grade II rapids provide the perfect balance of excitement and safety. You'll experience the thrill of whitewater while remaining comfortable enough for conversation, learning, and taking in the spectacular scenery. Our guides will navigate while teaching you paddling techniques and pointing out geological and ecological features along the way.

Important Information
Experience Level
Minimum age is 5 years old, however this is subject to river conditions. During high water volumes (typically spring), the minimum age may be increased to 8-10 years for safety. We'll advise you of current conditions when you book.
Swimming Ability Required
Participants should be comfortable in water. Swimming ability is recommended but not essential - all participants wear life jackets at all times. Please advise us if anyone in your group is not a confident swimmer.
Booking & Planning
Participants should be in good general health. This trip involves moderate physical activity including paddling and climbing in/out of the raft. Please advise us of any medical conditions, injuries, or pregnancy. If you're unsure whether this trip is suitable for you, please contact us to discuss.
Weather Dependent
We operate in most weather conditions - rain often makes for the best rafting! However, if river conditions are unsafe or extreme weather is forecast, we'll contact you to reschedule or provide a full refund. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need rafting experience?
No experience necessary! This trip is perfect for first-timers. Our guides provide full instruction and are with you throughout the entire journey.
Will we get wet?
Yes! You will get splashed and possibly completely wet, especially in rapids. That's part of the fun! We provide wetsuits when water temperatures are cold.
What if my child is younger than 5?
Unfortunately, we cannot take children under 5 years old for safety reasons. Consider our custom private trips which may offer more flexibility for older children, or plan to return when they're a bit older!
Can non-swimmers participate?
Yes, but they must be comfortable in water and wear a life jacket at all times (which is required anyway). Please let us know in advance so our guides can provide extra attention.
What happens if someone falls out?
While rare on Grade II rapids, if someone does fall in, their life jacket keeps them afloat and our guides are trained in swift water rescue. We practice rescue procedures during the safety briefing.
Can I bring my camera?
Waterproof cameras are welcome! We recommend action cameras like GoPros with secure mounts. Regular phones/cameras should stay in our waterproof bags. Professional photos of your trip are available for purchase.
